About Dr. Stone

I am a Clinical Psychologist with over 15 years of experience providing effective therapy to children, teenagers, young adults, adults, and families in community mental health, school-based health and private practice settings.  I value diversity in all its forms.  My approach to treatment is integrative, collaborative and trauma informed.  I draw from various methodologies including psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, and humanistic.  I also specialize in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy for children, teens, and adults, and routinely incorporate mindfulness and self-compassion-based practices.

About Dr. Stone’s Approach to Wellness

I believe that we all have an innate drive toward well-being and wholeness.  But life is hard, and negative experiences during childhood and adulthood can interfere with our natural inclination to thrive. We may develop inaccurate views of ourselves, others, and the world that help us to survive but can also limit us.

Fortunately, neuroscience teaches us that our brains are always changing.  New relationships and new ways of relating to our experience can alter networks in the brain, re-MINDing us of our vast possibilities and our inherent worth.

I am confident that within the context of the safe and therapeutic relationship we will develop, you will grow to appreciate your unique strengths and see more possibilities for your life. We will work collaboratively to develop awareness of habits of thought and action, allowing you more freedom to respond rather than react. Cultivating self-compassion helps us to soften harsh judgements that often keep us stuck and informs us to treat ourselves with kindness.  EMDR is a re-processing therapy.  When distressing memories are re-processed, we have access to new information and fixed negative beliefs we may have about ourselves can shift, exerting less influence on our lives.

Wanting and making change requires courage and effort.  The caterpillar actively struggles in the chrysalis to emerge as a butterfly.  Therapy can involve intense feelings and discomfort.  But you will not be alone.  I commit to joining you on the journey with a calm, curious and compassionate presence.  With time, like the butterfly, you will notice more freedom, movement, and beauty in yourself and in your life.

You will Emerge.

About Dr. Stone’s Approach to Working with Children and Teens

Modern society is stressful.  I believe we are never too young to learn about the connection between our minds and bodies, and skills for dealing with challenging thoughts and feelings.  I also believe that it is important to teach youth to be good friends to themselves, especially when they are struggling.  Among others, mindfulness and self-compassion skills build resilience for the inevitable ups and downs of life.

Children and teens grow within family and school contexts.  I regularly collaborate with families and school personnel to support the needs and development of children and teens.
